I'unno. As much as I want to love technology, I'm not sure if the induction cooktop could slowly become the next big thing. FWIW, you need to have quite a lot of pots and pans that could hold a magnet and it's only a small little device compared to a washer-sized range.

Kinja'd!!!

Benefits? Well, it heats up pans like no other and only a portion of the surface (depending on where the pan is placed) is utilized to heat the cooking vessel. It's also cool to the touch afterwards.

It even has its own anti-dumb deterrent by disabling the magnetic element should the vessel be removed.

But... I just can't really be open to the idea of a magnet cooking food.

Will it heat my cast iron pans?

They have full induction stove-tops last I checked. That little device you see is just good marketing.

See if a magnet can stick under it.

Wait, what? When did this happen?

Edit: fuck me sideways with a spoon, never knew they came out with full-stove offerings.

Kinja'd!!!

But no oven, man!

Yup. I drool over 'em every time I go to Lowe's. A definite DO WANT

A couple of years ago, at least. They are just cost-prohibitive.

Apparently yes but it will probably scratch up the cooking surface. I'm not sure why that would be an issue.

I prefer cooking with fire.

I think the pans must be at least magnetic - made out of cast iron for the cooktop to work.

I think induction heating is nice, but I prefer the feedback and emotion behind cooking over an open fire. Sure, it may not be as convenient as magnets cooking my food (how do they work?), but the fun that I get from fireside cooking is why I do it. I may get weird looks whenever I help cook at my friends' gatherings, but I can take satisfaction in cooking things the way lightning intended, instead of focusing on what will boil water the fastest.

Heck, barbecues have that unique factor to them too.

You can also get duals for countertop types.

Not quite true – it is using a magnetic field to induce a current in the pot, rather than actually magnetising it. Anything conductive will work, magnetic or not, but copper is best.

As for oven, my microwave is also a convection oven, really saves on space and works like a champ. Also, the microwave has 2000 watts of POWAAAA

All cast irons works even enameled. I'm going to stick with my old fashioned flaming gas food cookers.

We have induction stuff at our house, its pretty awesome. But like you said you need the right pots/pans

What's wrong with using magnets to induce heat in metal? It's not like the magnet will affect the food directly.

It also is preferable to me than using radiation to vibrate the water in my food (microwave)

All the ones I've used have cycle time heating which is terrible for precision temperature control. I've heard that the mega expensive ones are better...but I'll stick to gas.

I worked at sears back in 2009 and we sold inducting cooktops, they are nothing new but very cool. The only downside is that you have to have compatible pots and pans like you mentioned.
